It was a tough week in the Carpenter household. Here’s a list of things that made it a little lighter…
#1 Jeans, one size up.
Ever since I bought a pair of jeans that are one size bigger than I typically wear, it’s hard to wear any others. WHY DID I WAIT SO LONG TO DO THIS?! What was the big deal in sizing up? No one even knows the size of our clothes! (Not since middle school?) Wearing pants I feel comfortable in and don’t have to unbutton after a bowl of pasta was a win this week. Size up your jeans. Thank me later.
#2 A reliable handyman.
School and daycare were closed in honor of Martin Luther King Jr. Day. I was fully prepared to be “on” with the kids, but our power went out. And there was a torrential downpour, so we were cooped up in the apartment sans electricity. The kids were bored and hungry only for things we needed power to make. Just when I thought things couldn’t get worse, a curtain rod fell off the wall in our foster-daughter’s bedroom. I texted our building’s maintenance guy. To my surprise, he came right over to fix it. A small thing that could’ve been a huge headache— solved in a matter of a few minutes. Having people who will show up when times are tough is a gift. A reliable handyman is clutch. Thank those who show up for you. A Tupperware of cookies doesn’t hurt either.
#3 Being friends with a neighbor, and a bowl of ramen.
My neighbor and I were texting on Tuesday. She wasn't having a great day and mine had been a train wreck too. She suggested ordering take-out (best ramen in L.A.) and eating dinner together, which turned out to be just the thing I needed after a really difficult day. Get to know your neighbor. Comfort food sometimes included.
#4 An encouraging conversation.
My conversation with Ashley Abercrombie released Wednesday morning on A Longer Table Podcast. Ash made me feel all sorts of peace about aging, motherhood, and friendship. Listen to the episode. You’re bound to feel better about the timing of your life afterwards.
#5 The Essential Calendar.

I started buying jeans that actually fit me WELL last year and it was a game-changer. I also don't know why I waited so long. But, it brought me a lot of peace and comfort; I felt good and looked good, too.
